How to: Brake Pad Change
Honda brakes are generally pretty good. My car has 4 wheel discs and has been running stock pads which are pretty worn, and it was time for a change. You can spend a lot of money on brake upgrades but a simple pad and fluid change will be enough for daily driving and the odd trip to the track.
I am still working on the engine of my car at this stage to I decided to go for an above average combination of Ferodo pads and Castrol Super Response Fluid. I may upgrade to a better set of pads when I start making trips to the track.

Front Brake Pads
First loosen the wheel nuts, jack the car up, put in jack stands and remove the wheels.
For the front brake pads you only need to remove 1 of the two bolts and rotate the caliper up as shown in the first picture. You don't need to remove the whole caliper like I have in the other pics.
Because the new pads may be quite a lot thicker than the old ones, you might have to squeeze the piston in with a C-clamp. This is so you will be able to rotate the caliper with new pads back onto the brake disc.
Once you have squeezed the piston in enough to clip the new pads in, rotate the caliper back down and replace the bolt. You don't have to replace the shims, although if you decide not to you may get some increased noise.
Replacing the rear pads
Loosen the wheel nuts, jack the car up, put in jack stands and remove the wheels. Remove the caliper shield by removing the two 10mm bolts
For the rear pads you have to remove the whole caliper by loosening the two bolts. Remove the caliper being careful not to bend the hand brake cable. As with the front caliper, you need to force the piston to fit the new pads in. Unlike the front, you need to rotate the piston to move it in. You cant just squeeze it in.
Rotate the caliper piston clockwise to move it inwards and leave enough room for the new pads. Make sure the tab on the pad lines up with the piston as shown in the diagram.
Replace the pads and bolt the caliper back on.
This website has been gradually growing since I started it in early 2002. Originally I was simply documenting modifications and repairs to my car but I decided to publish it when I began to discover others were interested in the information.
