How to: Cold Air Intake
I Originally had a Simota intake and pod filter in 3 inch alloy, similar to the AEM short ram setup.
I bought a 3 inch steel mandrel bent 90 degree bend which fits on and moves the filter down into the spot where the resonator used to be.
Simota intakes are available from Autopassion New Zealand and Simota Australia
You'll also need a short piece of 3 inch internal diameter pipe and two more hoseclamps.
I noticed it was getting pretty hot so instead of buying some expensive intake wrap I got some pipe sealing stuff from Para Rubber. It cost about $10 then I wrapped it in sticky foil stuff. I haven't done any tests but I'm sure it's much colder inside.
The main problem with this setup is getting water in your engine. If this happens, you'll have big problems. The only way this will happen is if your intake gets completely submerged, so stay away from big puddles!! There's a bypass valve you can get to stop this but they cost quite a bit, and lose performance. I just take the extension off in the rainy season.
It's also a bit of a pain to clean your filter, because you have to undo the splash guard and try and get to the hose clamp on the filter, it's just a bit fiddley but you don't have to do it often.
Also, if you go for ordinary steel, watch out for flecks of rust on the 90 degree bent section, I'd probably pay for stainless or alloy if I did it again.
