How to: Extractor Installation
As the first official modification to my ITR, I decided to install some stainless steel extractors. Since my car is the 1995 version it only comes with a cast intake manifold and doesn't have the mild steel 4-1 of the later models.
Below are a few pics, the brand is X-force which is definitely not a name brand but the welds appear to be pretty solid. Time will tell.
Installation is quite simple, at least it would be if not for the rounded exhaust manifold nut I only just noticed. I had to use a dremel to grind the nut down, damaging the head stud in the process.
Remove the 9 12mm exhaust manifold nuts, 2 12mm spring-loaded bolts and the 2 12mm mounting bolts from the bracket, as pictured below. There is another 14mm bolt which connects the manifold to the block (not pictured) Also unclip the oxygen sensor.
The whole manifold can now be removed, you don't have to separate the upper and lower halves (hooray).
Below is a comparison of the two manifolds. You need to remove the round gasket off the old manifold, I put a bit of exhaust cement around it to seal it up nicely. The new set came with an upper manifold gasket, the old one came off easily.
Re-install the new manifold. I had to modify the new gasket a little with a grinder and loosen some of the mounting rubbers so it sits properly.
Before starting the car use a cloth to wipe all your fingerprints off it (otherwise they will be baked on there forever)
I'll post some results when I get a chance for a decent drive.
